TELECOMS WORLD AFRICA 2005 TO FOCUS ON BOOSTING AFRICAN TELECOMS PENETRATION

 

Taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 5 to 9 September, Telecoms World Africa 2005 provides a director-level interactive conference with panel discussions and practical case studies aimed at developing strategies for boosting telecoms penetration on the continent.

 

Presenters and panellists are industry leaders from major African fixed line and mobile operators. Sponsors include diamond partner MTN for the second year in a row, ZTE, Business Connexion, Huawei, Nokia, Belgacom, Telkom, IST Data and Gilat Satcom.

 

Says Dr Yvonne Muthien, Group Executive: Corporate Affairs, MTN Group: “As the leading telecoms operator on the continent, MTN believes the Telecoms World Africa conference facilitates constructive dialogue and the sharing of ideas regarding how to effectively implement telecoms solutions in developing markets. Dr Muthien added that MTN Group had invested R23.4 billion in infrastructure development and R92 million on social investment across its GSM networks in South Africa, Swaziland, Rwanda, Uganda, Cameroon and Nigeria. More recently the Group announced the acquisition of two significant GSM networks - in Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia.

 

Several top MTN executives will be speaking at Telecoms World Africa 2005, including Buckley McGrath (Chief Operating Officer of MTN Service Provider), Bernice Samuel (General Manager: Brand of MTN SA), Paul Salvage (General Manager: Research and Development of MTN Group) as well as Dr Muthien.

 

Telecoms World Africa will also feature Engr Ernest Ndukwe, Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Communication Commission, discussing the challenges of creating policy and regulation in a converged ICT era. He will cover topics such as current regulation trends in the African market, transparent pricing regimes and the effect of broadband licensing and ownership on competition.

 

Daniel Kurgan, Vice President Commercial, Belgacom Belgium proposes the question: Do carriers in Africa need new business models? He will present carrier trends and possibilities in Africa and beyond, the advantages of global reach, premium quality and a comprehensive portfolio to create a win-win situation.

 

John Slaighter Munsaka, Managing Director, Zamnet Communications Systems Zambia will present a truly African case study focusing on the future role of ISP’s in an increasingly liberalised environment, In addition, hear from Karl Socikwa, Chief Executive Officer, Transtel South Africa, presenting a case study on the Second National Operator (SNO).

 

Terrapinn also presents Robert G. Rogers, Executive Director: Global Info Infrastructure Commission, United States of America. Rogers will present a keynote address on creating public policies and identifying IT applications that will increase investment in communications infrastructure. Furthermore he joins in a panel discussion on the evaluation of the market and technological solutions for future growth maximization. Jonathan Berman, Managing Director, Deutsche Bank South Africa and Heloise Smith, Head: African Telecoms Finance, Standard Bank South Africa also feature on the speaker’s bill.
